Nonprofit Organizations

These days, nonprofits are facing particularly challenging times.
Donors are discerning, and have more options than ever before from which to choose. Nonprofits must compete with other organizations in their mission “space,” while the expense of running an effective nonprofit continues to rise.

It is therefore more important than ever for nonprofit endowment funds and investments to be overseen by objective, professional advisors who understand this environment.

The SHWM team works with nonprofits, including endowments and foundations, to provide thoughtful, goal-oriented wealth management services. The organizations we work with benefit from access to our deep investment knowledge and expertise as well as through our association with Smith & Howard, a nationally recognized accounting firm with a large nonprofit client family and dedicated team of CPAs who focus on nonprofit accounting, audit and tax needs. The combination of our investment offerings and nonprofit expertise from our CPA sister-firm distinguishes SHWM from other investment advisors.

Our investment approach appeals to nonprofits with its extensive use of highly liquid low-cost index funds and our disciplined approach.

Just like our individual clients, nonprofits experience a level of personal service that creates a sound, trusted relationship for all involved. We believe in long-term relationships, and work to establish and keep those relationships as a reliable, trusted advisor in an environment that is constantly changing.

Retirement Plan Consulting Services

As a business owner or executive, you may already have or be considering implementing a retirement plan for your employees.

In either case, SHWM can be a valuable partner in this process.

Unlike many firms, we do not sell or endorse proprietary products. Instead, we serve as consultants to our business clients, helping them find the right retirement plan solution.

That solution might be a profit sharing plan, a plan with a 401(k) feature, a traditional defined benefit plan or a new cash balance plan. Regardless, our relationships with top retirement plan service providers allow us to present you with realistic options that match your needs with the services of the provider.

Our advisors stay with you every step of the way, helping you understand and address your role as fiduciary, meeting with plan trustees to establish priorities, helping guide development of the investment policy statement and helping the plan sponsor determine the investment lineup or investment allocation for the plan.

We can also assist with 401(k) conversion services: searching for a new plan provider, working with you and your provider on plan design changes, monitoring the conversion and scheduling employee education and enrollment meetings.

Long after your plan is in place, we are still working with you to provide state of the plan review meetings, quarterly performance reviews, monitoring for compliance and assisting with such things as potential DOL audits.

We commit to understanding your business needs and investment requirements, but also to being available and responsive to you throughout the year. You can trust SHWM to be objective at all times – looking out only for your best interests.
